The client’s needs were achieved with:
- The use of modern and unique finishes in the cabinetry, quartz countertops, modern appliances,
and a backsplash tile that is the pure expression of glam with its attractive gold floral design. The overall
floor plan and design focused on beauty with improved functionality through a new island design and perimeter
cabinetry built flush with appliances to streamline the overall look.
|
The function of the space was enhanced through:
- A new design that removed the peninsula that had become a “catch all”, as well as increasing
the size of the island with asymmetrical seating that provides better viewing through the large banks of windows
and compliments conversation. Recessed cans within the soffit, as well as under cabinet lighting highlight the
new working surfaces.
|
Aesthetically the space was enhanced with:
- The addition of suspended floating soffits that give a sense of separation of the
kitchen from the open floor plan, as well as conceal the exposed mechanical and concrete ceiling. The ambiance of
the kitchen was created by adding rope lighting above the main soffit and by re-using the client’s existing red
crystal pendants. The cabinetry is a combination of walnut (the dark trim), quartersawn rift cut oak, kirei, and
brushed gold laminate.
|
Craftsmanship on the project was outstanding in all aspects, but visually shows in details such as:
- The transformation of the original design into actual construction. For example: the tight
tolerances of the radius gold laminate on the curved island bases to the countertop overhang, blending of the
cabinetry with the use of 3 different materials and finishes, as well as hanging of the floating soffits to conceal
pipes and ducts.
|
Innovative materials were used in:
- The use of Kirei board (www.kireiusa.com) in the custom upper cabinets. Kirei is a green
product and environmentally friendly substitute for wood made from reclaimed sorghum straw. The state-of-the-art
kitchen faucet with pull-out spray and built in LED light. The new modern appliances include a Miele concealed
pull-out exhaust hood, dishwasher drawers, a Miele warming drawer as well as a built-in coffee/espresso maker (to
save on those early morning stops to the local coffee shops).
|
Obstacles on site included:
- Working downtown meant having to deal with issues related to parking, elevators, and means for
disposal of materials. In addition, the client did not desire to break into their existing concrete floor so the
overall layout and mechanicals had to work within the existing space.
